A River Journey Slowly Down the Irrawaddy

A River Journey Slowly Down the Irrawaddy

One of my favourite regular commissions is to run a travel photography workshop on board a boat called The Road To Mandalay chartered by The Ultimate Travel Company for journeys up the Irrawaddy River to explore rarely visited remote villages, temples and Buddhist monasteries of Upper Burma. We sail north from Mandalay during the monsoon season when the river is in full flood, the only time of the year it is navigable through the narrow defiles on the way to Bhamo on the Chinese border. Its an epic journey that evokes echoes of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness as we travel deep into steamy jungles and stop off at places few foreign travellers ever reach. I give an initial lecture on how to take better travel photographs then daily workshops and one to one sessions that start everyday at dawn when the light can be magical as the rising sun burns off the morning mist.
